Proposal to Include Moral Foundations Questions on the American National Elections Survey (ANES) 2008 Questionnaire

چکیده
Introduction A large body of recent research demonstrates that individuals' moral worldviewsthe categorical modes they use to make decisions about right and wronginfluence many of the choices they make and the outcomes they experience. An obvious, if understudied, arena for considering the outcomes of these moral worldviews is in citizens' political choices. We therefore propose the addition of the 31-item version of the Moral Foundations Questionnaire (MFQ; Graham, Haidt, and Nosek 2007) and a single-question measure of moral cultures (Hunter 2000; Vaisey 2007) to the ANES 2008 battery. These would allow for theoretically important linkages between morality and political thought and behavior. In addition, including both the one-question and the MFQ versions would allow for estimating the validity of the shorter version on a nationally representative sample. However, if resources do not allow both versions, there is sufficient existing research to make the one-item question useful alone.

Since the inception of the American National Election Study (ANES) in the 1940s, data have been collected via face-to-face interviewing in the homes of members of area probability samples of American adults, the same gold-standard approach used by the U.S. Census Bureau, other federal agencies, and some nongovernment researchers for many of the most high-profile surveys conducted today. This pa...

Based on the view of morality proposed by the Moral Foundations Theory, this paper investigates whether voting intention is associated with moral foundation endorsement in not perfectly bipolar electoral contexts. Three studies carried out in Italy from 2010 to 2013, showed that controlling for ideological orientation, moral foundation endorsement is associated with voting intention. In Study 1...

Misreporting is a problem that plagues researchers that use survey data. In this paper, we develop a parametric model that corrects for misclassified binary responses using information on the misreporting patterns obtained from auxiliary data sources. The model is implemented within the Bayesian framework via Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods, and can be easily extended to address other p...
متن کاملPresidential Campaigns and the Fundamentals Reconsidered
The contrast between the predictability of presidential elections and the variability of early polls has come to be viewed as evidence that campaigns provide crucial information to voters. We argue that unmotivated survey respondents offering minimally acceptable answers (i.e., satisficing) offers an additional explanation for the classic conundrum of why the polls vary when the election outcom...
متن کاملIntroduction to the Volume
Public opinion surveys provide insights into a very large range of social, economic, and political phenomena. In this book, we look at the survey itself as the means by which the scholarly community seeks to understand those phenomena. A survey can be understood as a collection of ideas at the forefront both of what the scholarly community believes to be important for understanding opinion and ...
